Universitas Gadjah Mada Develops AI-Based Smart Portable Roaster for High-Quality Coffee and Cocoa

Yogyakarta – Radi, a researcher from Agricultural Technology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), is leading an innovative research project to develop a Smart Portable Roaster. This device is designed to improve the quality of roasted coffee and cocoa beans through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly computer vision and deep learning, to predict roasting levels. The research, funded by DRTPM (a grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology), has been underway since 2022 and is targeted for completion in 2025.

The research, titled “Design of a Smart Portable Roaster for High-Quality Roasted Coffee/Cocoa Bean Production Innovation,” focuses on developing a system capable of automatically and accurately determining the roasting level of coffee or cocoa beans. Radi explained that one of the key components of this smart roaster is a roasting-level prediction model utilizing computer vision and deep learning technologies. “With this technology, we hope to produce roasted coffee and cocoa beans with consistent and high quality, which has been difficult to achieve manually,” he stated.

This project is a collaborative effort with both national and international partners, reflecting Universitas Gadjah Mada’s commitment to delivering relevant and impactful technological solutions. To date, the research—fully supported by DRTPM through the Kemendikbudristek grant—has produced an initial prototype and continues to be developed toward a fully deployable AI-based product. The final output is expected to be a functional AI prototype or product.

It is hoped that this Smart Portable Roaster will not only become a key innovation in the coffee and cocoa processing industry but also empower farmers and small and medium enterprises to produce export-quality products. This innovation further reinforces the role of Universitas Gadjah Mada in advancing agricultural technology in Indonesia.
