Universitas Gadjah Mada Develops Smart Robotic Arm for Automated Agricultural Product Sorting

Yogyakarta – Radi, a researcher from the Agricultural Technology Unit at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), is leading an innovative research project to design an automated sorting and grading system for agricultural products based on robotic arm technology. This project aims to improve efficiency and accuracy in post-harvest handling, supported by funding from DRTPM (a grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology) and is scheduled to run from 2022 to 2025.

The research, titled “Design of an Automated Sorting and Grading System for Agricultural Products Based on Robotic Arm Technology,” focuses on developing automation solutions for critical processes in the agricultural supply chain. The system is designed to intelligently identify, sort, and classify agricultural products based on criteria such as size, color, or defects, using robotic arms integrated with Machine Learning/Deep Learning technologies.

Radi and his team aim to create a prototype or AI-based product that can reduce reliance on manual labor, minimize human error, and ultimately improve the quality and market value of agricultural products. The research also involves collaboration with both national and international partners, reflecting Universitas Gadjah Mada’s comprehensive approach to technology development. The expected output of this research is a functional AI prototype or product.

With the implementation of this automated sorting and grading system, Indonesia’s agricultural sector is expected to achieve higher quality standards, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance competitiveness in the global market. This innovation marks a significant step by Universitas Gadjah Mada in supporting agricultural modernization through the utilization of artificial intelligence.
