Dr. Ir. Radi from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully completed research on the development of a Smart Irrigation System (SIS) model based on Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) in 2019. This innovation aims to support precision agriculture, particularly in pineapple plantations, by utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technology integrated with artificial intelligence.
The research, funded by the Faculty’s DIPA, produced a model and algorithm that serve as the foundation for SIS implementation. The system is designed to enable real-time monitoring of soil and plant conditions through a wireless sensor network. As a result, water distribution can be optimized according to the specific needs of pineapple plantations, ultimately improving water-use efficiency and agricultural productivity significantly. This precision agriculture approach, leveraging AI-based IoT technology, offers an innovative solution to resource management challenges in the agricultural sector.
The successful development of the SIS model marks a significant step forward by Universitas Gadjah Mada in supporting sustainable agriculture through technological innovation. It is expected that this model can be widely implemented to enhance efficiency and productivity in Indonesia’s agricultural sector.
