Universitas Gadjah Mada Introduces Smart Laboratory Information System Based on Google Sites and AI
YOGYAKARTA – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through researcher Alifah Mubarokah, is developing an innovative Laboratory Information System (SIL) that leverages Google Sites and integrates artificial intelligence technology, specifically Search Vertex AI. This cross-faculty collaborative project aims to revolutionize laboratory data management, improve efficiency, and facilitate access to information for students and staff, supported by funding from the Karya Ilmiah Laboran (KILab 2024) program of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology.
The Laboratory Information System (SIL) is designed to record student activities, manage laboratory data efficiently, and significantly enhance information accessibility. Its key innovation lies in integrating an AI agent into the SIL website through Google Cloud Console, transforming the site into an AI assistant or intelligent browser.
The main objectives of implementing this Google-based SIL include improving laboratory management efficiency, simplifying access to data and information, and enabling more efficient data management by reducing potential errors, as the data is directly connected to the Google Drive database.
The development of this SIL involves several crucial stages. It begins with creating a Google Site connected to laboratory data in Google Drive, followed by designing the site interface to optimize Google Sites features. The final stage is the integration of AI into the site using the genAI Agent Builder on Google Cloud Console, adopting the Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) research approach. This research, initiated in 2024, has now entered the implementation phase.
With the implementation of this AI-integrated Google Sites-based SIL, laboratory management at Universitas Gadjah Mada is expected to become more modern, efficient, and responsive to academic needs. This initiative also demonstrates UGM’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to support education and research activities.
